PEBAX® TPE-A

Producer: Arkema
Polymer type TPE-A

Pebax® is a polyether block amide copolymer which offers the widest range of performances (mechanical, chemical, processing) among the thermoplastic elastomers (TPE).

General info

Pebax® is a thermoplastic elastomer (TPE-A) or a flexible polyamide without plasticiser consisting of a regular linear chain of rigid polyamide segments and flexible polyether segments. The Pebax® range enables to bridge the gap between thermoplastics and rubbers.

Pebax® provides an excellent balance of properties:

  • The lightest TPE
  • Large hardness range
  • The widest range of flexibility
  • Excellent dynamic properties, and low heat build up
  • Tear resistance and impact resistance
  • Flex fatigue resistance
  • Consistency of the mechanical properties at low temperatures

Properties

Lightness

Pebax® is a thermoplastic elastomer made up of block copolymers consisting of a sequence of polyamide and polyether segments. The Pebax® grades of the 33 series are composed of polyamide 12 segments (PA12) and polytetramethylene glycol segments (PTMG), leading to a very low material density when compared to the other thermoplastic elastomers, and independently from the grade rigidity Pebax® can be used pure, as an additive or in blends with other polymers or rubbers.

Hardness

Hardness can be defined as the resistance of a material to an indentation deformation. The higher the hardness, the better the material’s resistance to the indenting deformation will be. For thermoplastic materials, the hardness is characterised with the Shore D reference, whereas the Shore A reference is used for elastomers and low modulus materials.

Pebax hardness is a function of the ratio Polyamide/Polyether.

Flexural Modulus

Flexural modulus is a function of the ratio Polyamide/Polyether. The following graph illustrates the flexural modulus range offered by the Pebax® 33 series, going from approximately 10 to 500 Mpa.

Elastic properties

The elastic behaviour of Pebax®, that is to say the ability of the material to recover its initial shape after a given deformation, can be measured by remnant deformation under tensile or compression conditions, or by an elastomeric limit test. The remnant deformation is obtained by measuring the deformation remaining constant after x % of elongation and relaxation to the initial state. The hard Pebax® grades lead to the highest remnant deformation.

Elastic return

The hysteresis measurement or energy return can be performed under different solicitations, not only using a tensile cycle test but also when using a dynamic cycle compression test. The speed, as well as the amplitude of the deformation, are important parameters.

Hysteresis of Pebax® 2533 is poorly dependent on the applied deformation.
